#29 +V̶

Grace starts to wonder if he has young kids in 01.207 when he finds himself saying “What the fudge is going on?!” Then in his memory of the discovery of “aliens” (02.163 and 02.179), he recalls that he couldn’t wait to tell the kids. He realizes in 02.184 that he must be a schoolteacher.

Grace’s Kids appear in two sections: Section 12 (03.00103.118) and Section 20 (04.14604.230)

Names are given for 11 of them: Abby, Michael, Trang, Harrison, Luther, Larry, Tamora, Theresa, Jeff, Regina, and Tracy. All but Tracy speak.

Abby’s direct speech consists of 16 quoted passages, 86 tokens, and 60 unique words. Other than the narrator, she is the only person to use the words ‘answered’, ‘answering’, ‘Alpha’, ‘Centauri’, or ‘Trang’.

Michael’s direct speech consists of 5 quoted passages, 45 tokens, and 36 unique words. He is the only person to use the words ‘substitute’, ‘booooring’, ‘sorting’, or ‘Tracy’.

Trang’s direct speech consists of 4 quoted passages, 15 tokens, and 15 unique words. He is the only person to use the partial word ‘hundre—’.

Harrison’s direct speech consists of 3 quoted passages, 19 tokens, and 16 unique words. They are the only person other than the narrator to use the word ‘speech’.

Luther’s direct speech consists of 3 quoted passages, 14 tokens, and 13 unique words.

Larry’s direct speech consists of 3 quoted passages, 9 tokens, and 9 unique words. He is the only person to use the word ‘sedentary’ (by which, as Abby points out, he meant ‘sedimentary’).

Tamora’s direct speech consists of 2 quoted passages, 15 tokens, and 11 unique words. They are the only person to say the word ‘conspiracy’, which they apparently picked up from their dad.

Theresa’s direct speech consists of 1 quoted passage, 4 tokens, and 4 unique words.

Jeff’s direct speech consists of 1 quoted passage, 1 token: ‘Polaris’, which he is the only person to use.

Regina’s direct speech consists of 1 quoted passage, 1 token: ‘c’ (referring to the speed of light).

At the start of Section 12 (03.002), the students collectively yell “Lightning round!”.

Although not named, a new set of kids are enthusiastic to answer Grace’s question in the final sentence of the book, 30.077.

The token count here is spaCy’s tokenization minus punctuation.

Unique words here means unique lemmas (with lemmatization also from spaCy) with minor corrections as we find mistakes.

Speaker identification was done manually.

I have to do this for my kids. I mean…they’re not my kids. But they’re my kids.
