Humans have sent space missions to Venus since the 1960s, though many early attempts ended in failure.

The first successful flyby of Venus was performed by Mariner 2 in 1962, with the first successful atmospheric entry by Venera 4 in 1967. Later missions successfully soft landed on Venus, providing us with a view of the planet's surface.

Panorama of the Venusian surface taken by the Venera 13 lander in 1982: A colour 170 degree panorama displaying brown and red flat rock slabs and soil. The top of a portion of the spacecraft with many small triangular protrusions is visible at the bottom of the image. A round camera lens cap is visible on the soil, amid rocks and pebbles.

NASA’s NSSDC site may be down and so the second and third links might not be working currently.

Tell us about going to Venus… What makes it so hard?
