#23 λV̶

We are introduced to Marissa in 02.033, the beginning of the first Earth section of chapter 2 (and only the second Earth section ever). She does not appear in any other sections.

Ryland has known her for almost twenty years, going back to grad school.

Marissa’s direct speech consists of 19 quoted passages, 310 tokens, and 139 unique words.

She is the only character to say the words ‘coordinating’, ‘trend’, ‘announce’, ‘addresses’, ‘Amaterasu’, and ‘decreasing’ and the only person other than the narrator to use the words ‘starvation’, ‘steak’, ‘whiskey’, ‘brighter’, ‘Japanese’, or ‘downward’.

Marissa is the only person besides Grace and Rocky to ‘fidget’. She and Stratt are the only two who ‘mulled’ something over. Marissa, Stratt, and Ilyukhina all ‘down’ their drinks (whiskey, gin, and vodka respectively).

The token count here is spaCy’s tokenization minus punctuation.

Unique words here means unique lemmas (with lemmatization also from spaCy) with minor corrections as we find mistakes.

Speaker identification was done manually.

I met Marissa every Thursday night for steak and beer at Murphy’s on Gough Street.
