The phrase “Hail Mary” occurs 148 times in Project Hail Mary, appearing in 25 of the book’s 30 chapters. It is absent only from Chapters 1, 2, 20, 27, and 28.
In Space sections, the phrase occurs 100 times: the narrator uses it 96 times, Grace says it 3 times, and Rocky says it 1 time.
In Earth sections, the phrase occurs 48 times. Stratt says it 17 times (the most of any speaker in either timeline). The Earth narrator uses it 10 times, Steve Hatch says it 5 times, and Grace and Dr. Lokken each say it 4 times.
Chapter 18 has the highest count (14 times), followed by Chapter 23 (12), Chapter 8 (11), and Chapter 29 (10).
