#103 VV̶I

In beanbag #88 we looked at single-quoted ‘so-called’ phrases.

Here we’ll look at the same phenomenon in double-quotes where there are considerably more. Here are some examples from just the first six chapters:

one in my “gentlemen’s equipment,” 01.039
I don’t feel “sick.” 01.143
there’s just a…“wrongness” to it. 01.157
I may be getting better, but I’m not “well.” 01.216
That same feeling of “wrongness” strikes me. 01.230
Kind of like “batteries included” toys. 01.237
That’s why things falling “feel” wrong to me. 01.245
The tape measure will be playing the role of “dead weight” in this experiment. 02.007
I go back downstairs to the “bedroom.” 02.014
if I were in a centrifuge, the “gravity” down here would be higher than it was upstairs. 02.021
After a lot of “crazy prisoner scribbling on a wall”–type stuff, I have my answer. 02.024
these beds aren’t magical “freeze chambers” like in the movies. 02.091
all I’ve discovered so far is a “coma room” and a lab. 02.172
I have to search my mind. Because the “key” is my own name. 02.173
It had taken me years to cultivate a rep as the “cool” teacher. 03.008
“Measured velocity” is going down by one every sixty-six seconds. 03.154
That’s the same “gravity” acceleration I worked out earlier. 03.154
The name and “port of call” for this vessel. 03.161
what my students would call a “sick burn.” 04.069
I called it the “Bruce Banner Test.” 04.070
I have these little “beetle” ships 04.259
The “door” was a plywood panel that I could remove with screws. 05.028
it would be distinct—a different “color.” 05.043
The “goggles” were just the LCD output screen of my IR camera with a bunch of tape around them. 05.072
I used the bathroom (or “head” I guess, because I was on a ship). 05.225
Hopefully there’s no “Blow Up the Ship” button. 06.029
that exact sensation because the “gravity” I’ve been experiencing 06.154
It’s just…“on” now. Nonstop. 06.205
